When faced with bipolar mania in children who are out of control on a daily basis can bring heartache, frustrations and the feeling of giving up. When others quickly judge and tell them that they as parents are to blame for the prolonged suffering can break many hearts especially when parents are trying their best. Many families because of their great love for their child can do anything just to make them feel better. But because all are ill prepared their actions in trying to control the child can add more to the problem.
Other Symptoms
An illness that is biological in nature but psychological in experience, bipolar is a brain illness that distorts moods, destroys rational thoughts and provokes frightening behaviors. Children can have other symptoms not related to bipolar which doctors have wrongly diagnosed as bipolar. These other symptoms add confusion and stress to everybody concerned with the child.
Mind Game
For the first treatment of bipolar mania in children, most would point to medicine or therapy. But that is not the case; Parents or caregivers must understand that they must change their attitude or they will find themselves swimming against the tide in trying to raise their young child who happens to be mentally ill. Just make sure you have an environment that is safe for all and do not try to talk the child out of their tantrums because that can be a great error.
Reward Your Child
Parents have felt sad, confused, and angry and literally being ripped apart by their bipolar child's wild behaviors. Many families have opted for physical punishment, others just throw in verbal insults which makes the situation worse. The physical punishments include hitting the child to taking away certain privileges. But one of the most effective of all is rewarding your child by something they like. Punishment is not a good option. Reward your child with something like this; If you take your medication all week we'll go to the zoo to watch your favorite dolphin over the weekend. If you are faithful in one month, we'll buy your favorite cartoon. And after one year you are still faithful with your prescribed drugs, I'll buy you a bicycle of your choice. And so forth. Try anything that works best for your child BUT DON'T HIT.
Not at Fault
Bipolar in children is a manic-depressive illness, which affects the brain and causes unusual shifts in a child's mood, energy, and their ability to function normally. This must be differentiated from the normal ups and downs that children go through but in children with the disorder it is more severe.
Final Warning
Do Not Hit your child. If you are doing this please seek counseling or other forms of help support because you may be a danger to your child.
