Work was starting to be too frantic for a young police officer named Gary. Although he had only been on the police force for two-and-a-half years, he was already known as a hard worker who hardly ever declined working overtime. In point of fact, he was now working twenty-five to thirty hours of overtime each week and, as a result, he felt like he was losing his hold on his personal life. What complicated the situation was the fact that Gary started going out drinking with a group of fellow officers after his shift.
What Began as a Good Time Soon Turned Into Hazardous and Careless Drinking
What began as fun very soon turned into abusive and irresponsible drinking and then into a negative cycle of feeling tired each morning when he awakened for work, working more long hours, and then going drinking with his pals after work.
Apparently Gary was in a psychological and health-related rut and going through some adverse alcohol effects on the body. Where Gary really noticed alcohol related issues and alcohol short term effects, on the other hand, was in his marriage and in his family life. His wife wasn’t really a nag, but she commonly encouraged him to stay at home more with the family instead of going out and blowing all of his money while drinking with his pals.
Gary’s Abusive and Irresponsible Drinking Negatively Affects His Personality
In a similar way, Gary’s irresponsible drinking also adversely affected his personality. Simply put, the more abusively he drank, the less patience he had with any difficulties or issues that arose regarding his children or his wife.
It Was Obvious to Gary That His Abusive Drinking Was Negatively Affecting His Health, Work, Relationship With His Family, and His Pocketbook
In his heart of hearts, it was apparent to Gary that his irresponsible and excessive drinking was negatively affecting his relationship with his family, work, pocketbook, and his health. So one Tuesday morning Gary decided to talk to Jerry, a trusted old police officer buddy that he greatly admired.
Gary mentioned to Jerry how careless drinking was negatively affecting his pocketbook, health, work, and his relationship with his family. Jerry mentioned to Gary that he really understood because roughly eight years ago, he too involved himself with abusive and hazardous drinking. In point of fact Jerry stated to Gary that hazardous and excessive drinking can create so many problems in an individual’s life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And lastly, Jerry suggested that Gary schedule an appointment with an alcohol abuse specialist at the work-affiliated drug and alcohol abuse rehab center.
Due to the fact that his employee’s assistance program was affiliated with this rehab facility, it was not only quite affordable but also very convenient to get some quality counseling about his careless and hazardous drinking. And due to the fact that the personnel at the drug and alcohol treatment center was competent, non-judgmental, and supportive, Gary would be able to get alcohol rehabilitation that was doable and something he could follow through on.
After talking to his psychologist about how his drinking was adversely affecting his work, health, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook, Gary comprehended the fact that he was burning the candle at both ends with his extreme work hours and his excessive and careless drinking. Once he comprehended that he was getting himself into a rut, with the help of his therapist, and after four months in therapy, he was eventually able to stop drinking and quit working overtime.
Due to His Alcohol Rehabilitation Gary Felt Better and More Healthy
The result was that Gary perceived life in a different way now that he was in alcohol recovery. To be more specific, due to his alcohol counseling he not only noticed that he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, but he was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, he felt better and more healthy, and he had more quality time to spend with his family. Strangely enough, now that he quit drinking, Gary and his wife were not only beginning to save some money for a different house but he also felt more energized and alert than anytime since he and his wife were married.
